Texas Professional Engineer License Renewal Requirements for 2024

As the 2024 PE renewal deadline approaches, professional engineers in Texas must ensure they meet all the necessary requirements to renew their PE licenses. The Texas Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors (TBPELS) mandates several key steps and PDH continuing education requirements for PE license renewal.

Renewal Process

  1. Annual Renewal: Texas Professional Engineers must renew their PE licenses annually by paying the required renewal fee before the expiration date1.
  2. Late Renewal: If the license has expired for 90 days or less, it can be renewed by paying the annual renewal fee plus a late fee. If expired for more than 90 days but less than two years, additional fees apply1.
  3. Criminal History Record Check: A one-time criminal history record check is required for all renewals1.

Continuing Education Requirements

To maintain licensure, TX professional engineers must complete 15 Professional Development Hours (PDH) each year. These hours must include:

  • Engineering Ethics and Rules: At least 1 PDH must be dedicated to professional ethics or a review of the Texas Engineering Practice Act.
  • Carryover Hours: Engineers can carry over up to 14 PDH from the previous year, excluding the ethics requirement.
