Louisiana Professional Engineers: License Renewal and Continuing Education Requirements

The Louisiana Professional Engineering and Land Surveying Board (LAPELS) has recently updated the requirements for professional engineer (PE) license renewal and continuing education. These changes aim to ensure that licensed engineers remain up-to-date with the latest industry standards and ethical practices.

Louisian PE License Renewal Process

To renew a PE license in Louisiana, engineers must follow these steps:

  1. Biennial Renewal: Engineers must renew their licenses every two years before the expiration date.

  2. Online Renewal: Engineers can renew their licenses online through the LAPELS website.

  3. Reinstatement: If a license has expired, engineers must apply for reinstatement and may need to meet additional requirements.

Louisian PE Continuing Education Requirements

Louisiana requires professional engineers to complete 30 Professional Development Hours (PDH) every two years. The requirements include:

  • 15 PDH per calendar year: Engineers must earn 15 PDH each year.

  • Ethics Requirement: At least one PDH must cover engineering ethics.

  • Life Safety Code: Engineers who design buildings must earn 4 PDH covering Life Safety Code, building codes, and/or Americans with Disabilities Act Accessibility Guidelines.

  • No More Than 8 PDH per Day: Engineers cannot earn more than 8 PDH in a single calendar day.

  • Online Courses: There is no limit on the number of hours that can be earned through online continuing education.

Engineers must keep detailed records of their PDH activities, including certificates of completion and summaries of self-study topics. A percentage of renewals are audited to ensure compliance with the PDH requirements.

The LAPELS emphasizes the importance of these requirements to maintain high standards of professional practice and public safety. Engineers are encouraged to stay informed about any changes to the renewal and PDH processes by visiting the LAPELS website or contacting their office directly.
