This engineering ethics course reviews the approach of the study of ethics, 5 prominent theories of ethics, and the application of these theories to serving the public as a Professional Engineer. This course can also be used to satisfy the PDH license renewal requirements for Professional Surveyors. This course is approved by the Florida Board of Professional Engineers as Florida Approved Course 0009949 and PDHNow is Florida Approved Provider 0006408.

Ethics is defined as the study of standards of conduct and moral judgment; moral philosophy. The purpose of this PDH course is to provide guidelines for ethical conduct for practitioners engaged in engineering activities. The course concludes with an evaluation exam covering all three chapters of the text.

This PE continuing education online course is designed to fulfill the requirements of 864 IAC 1.1-15-3(b) of the Indiana Board of Professional Engineers; Chapter 6, Paragraph 03 A (1) of the Maryland Board of Professional Engineers and has been approved by the Florida Board of Professional Engineers as course #0009949 under Rule 61G15-22.0101(5) by providing one hour of continuing education on ethics applicable to the practice of professional engineering. In addition, this course may be used to fulfill one of the two hour ethics course requirements for Wisconsin under section A-E13.03(1)(b).

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this professional engineer ethics course the learner will be able to:

  • Explain and discuss the standards of conduct and moral judgement and moral philosophy as it applies to engineers and real-world scenarios.
  • Based on the engineering perspective presented, show at least two different appropriate decisions when faced with an ethical dilemma.
  • Select and support an ethical course of action using the theories presented.
